Vedic Hatha Yoga is a style of classical hatha yoga which is based on ancient yoga and spiritual scriptures, including the Hatha Yoga Pradipika and the Patanjali sutras. Jana Thevar developed the flows and sequences of Vedic Hatha Yoga based on the teachings of her yoga and spiritual masters, notably Swami Sivananda and Swami Vishnudevananda.
According to ancient Vedic scriptures, the knowledge of yoga is considered an all-encompassing, spiritual practice rather than a purely physical one. It was passed down from teacher to teacher in various lineages of guru parampara (disciplic succession). As such, the original teachings of traditional hatha yoga is rooted in ancient Vedic scriptures, as the originator of all yogic knowldege is the Adi Yogi (or Adi Guru) Himself.
Jana Thevar teaches two versions of Hatha Yoga:
- Hatha Yoga which is solely made up of breathing exercises and yogic poses (pranayama and asanas). This version of yoga does not include spiritual or religious elements, and is suitable for everyone.
- Vedic Hatha Yoga which includes Sanskrit mantras, the use of spiritual beads (mala) and the study of Vedic scriptures, alongside the practice of asanas, kriyas and pranayama. This version of yoga is for students who wish to have the full experience of the original, traditional form of hatha yoga – spiritually, mentally and physically.
